Lamb to the Slaughter

Today we watched Lamb to the Slaughter at LT3. Lamb to the Slaughter is a short story by Roald Dahl, which was turned into a show by Alfred Hitchcock. There was a stark difference between the story and the show. Firstly, in the show,the policemen were smarter, they asked more questions and even suspected Mary Maloney of committing the crime. Secondly, we found out what the 'news' was. Thirdly, some of the words said were different.

Actually, Roald Dahl rewrote some parts of the story to fit the show. He even told us what happened to Mary Maloney in the end. ( Although she was not caught for killing Patrick, she tried to kill her second husband the same way.I wonder why... Unfortunately, or rather fortunately, her husband was forgetful and had forgotten to plug in the freezer, thus the meat was as soft as jelly and did not kill him. I think he is sure glad that he was forgetful! Kind of ironic don't you think ) 

I feel that Patrick Maloney only had himself to blame for his death. His wife was six months pregnant and then he suddenly tells her that he is leaving her and that he loves someone else. On top of that, he is uncaring and insensitive towards her, even after he told her the shocking news. But whatever the circumstances, manslaughter is still a crime and Mary Maloney should be prosecuted, regardless of whether she is pregnant or not.

But I have to admit that she is quick-witted as she was able to deceive the police on the spot and without any prior planning. She even managed to make the police dispose of the evidence themselves ( although they did it unwittingly)

Dear Diary,

Whew! The policemen finally left my house! It has been over three hours since they came. I have to admit that I am pretty proud of myself, making them eat the evidence. That must be a first! That comment by one of them( I am not sure who) was so funny, I could not help giggling! I hope that they did not hear me.(The comment was that the murder weapon was probably right under their noses. It was!)

Actually, I am quite relieved that they finally left. Although that was a 'perfect crime', master criminals still get caught. My alibi was perfect, had them baffled completely! Luckily I rehearsed my role, otherwise they would have suspected something,especially if I appeared nervous when I talked to Sam,the grocer.
I still don't know why I killed Patrick. Its just that we were still in the early stages of our marriage and I was(and still am) six months pregnant.He came home and suddenly said that he did not love me any more as he had just turned gay. That is very insensitive. You don't just suddenly turn gay over night! I think it was just because he did not love me any more and needed an excuse to divorce me. What drove me to breaking point was his comment just before he died. That was extremely insensitive. I am sure anyone else in my shoes would have done the same thing. But I have no regrets about killing him, its his own fault that he died.

Actually I feel that this test should contain a wider variety of questions as I felt that it did not address some issues. For example,I expected to be mainly Linguistic Smart as I like to read and write a lot. A possible reason that I am not Linguistic Smart in this test may be that there was no question about whether I liked to read. Another drawback of this questionnaire is that some of the questions asked if you LIKE doing this or doing that. You may be good at something but you may not like it, just like many students doing well in their studies but disliking them. I am sure that the majority of pupils who performed well in PSLE dislike studying.But overall it is still a useful questionnaire as it helps you to find out how you learn best and what you are good at.

In my opinion,we,as students of Hwa Chong,should be all rounded. We should have a balance between being Naturalistic,Kinaesthetic and Musical Smart(Group 1),Visual/Spatial,Linguistic and Logical Smart(Group 2) and Interpersonal and Intra personal Smart(Group 3)

I feel plagiarism should not be condoned as when someone writes an article, he puts a lot of hard work into it. When we blatantly copy someone's work, it is as good as cheating as all we need to do is find the information and then copy it. Imagine the person taking so much time to write the essay, and for us to instantly copy it and hand it in as our own. How would the author feel? And if that happens to us, how will we feel? The intended use if the essay is for people to refer to the information and understand the topic. Plagiarizing is the same as stealing, just that it is over the internet. People seem to think that since it is over the internet which has a vast array of information ,it is harder for the teachers to find out as compared to the times where you had to copy your essays from books. Actually, with the introduction of the internet, teachers can ‘google’ the essay or use websites such as ‘Essay Rater’ to find out whether a student has plagiarized. So although it has become easier to plagiarize, it has also become easier for teachers to check for plagiarism! But when we write essays, it is imperative that we need some information, so it may be necessary to copy. In that case, we should always cite sources and not copy too much. As Mr. Lundberg said, when in doubt, cite sources. Also, we should use programs like ‘Essay Rater‘(http://www.essayrater.com/ ) or ‘Write Check (http://writecheck.turnitin.com/static/home.html?gclid=CNnshNTpp58CFYItpAodHBla1A ) to ensure that we do not unintentionally plagiarize. All in all, just don't plagiarize!
